About Us

The Pharos Centre for Contemporary Art was inaugurated in October
2005 by the Minister of Education and Culture, Dr Pefkios
Georgiades. The first exhibition was an installation by Brazilian
artist
Antonio Manuel.
The Pharos Centre for Contemporary Art aims to provide a
contemporary art space where visiting international artists can work
and interact with local artists and the local community, as well as
create links with international audiences. Through the work of
established international artists and curators, the Centre seeks to
initiate a new artistic dialogue that will evolve and in turn bring
about a greater dialogue within the broader European art context.
Each year the Centre will be presenting several international
artists working in a variety of contemporary art forms – painting,
installations, performance, video art, photography – as well as
lectures and discussions. Exhibitions will be in many cases
individually curated and accompanied by catalogues published in
Greek, English, and Turkish.
The Pharos Centre for Contemporary Art also aims to cooperate with other centres of
contemporary art around the world, bring touring exhibitions to
Cyprus and, over time, build up a permanent collection of its own.
The Pharos Centre for
Contemporary Art is part of the Pharos Trust, a non-profit cultural
and educational foundation, and is therefore
directly dependent on sponsorship and donations for maintaining and
developing its activities.
