Anna Maria Maiolino (Brazilian)

 

Born in 1942 in Calabria, Italy, Anna Maria Maiolino immigrated in 1954 with her family to Caracas, Venezuela. She held her first solo exhibition in Caracas in 1964. Anna Maria Maiolino moved with her parents to Rio de Janeiro in 1960 and studied painting at the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes in Rio. In 1974, she received an award at the 1st Brazilian Festival of Super-8 Film for her work In-Out (Antropofagia). During her career she has gained an impressive international reputation. In 2001 Anna Maria Maiolino held a major solo show at the Drawing Centre in New York exhibiting her life’s work. Another retrospective was held at the Pinacoteca do Estado, São Paulo in 2005 and the MAC, Miami in 2006.
